The Collector’s Guide to Diamond Stud Earrings

A great pair of diamond studs is the workhorse of fine jewelry — the piece you wear on the boat, to dinner, and to bed. Before you buy a pair (yours or someone else’s), here are the six details that actually matter.

1. Carat weight — and what it looks like on the ear

Carat is a weight, not a size. Two 1-carat stones can look measurably different on the ear depending on cut proportions. As a rule of thumb for round brilliants:

• 0.25 ct total (0.125 per ear) — subtle, everyday, ≈3.1 mm
• 0.50 ct total — classic starter stud, ≈3.9 mm
• 1.00 ct total — “I can see them across the room,” ≈5.1 mm
• 2.00 ct total — statement, ≈6.4 mm
• 3.00 ct total+ — red-carpet / signature

Total weight (TW) on earrings is the sum of both stones. Always check whether the carat weight listed is per stone or total — on MyLuxVault earring pages we list total carat weight and per-stone where relevant.

2. Cut — the one C that actually changes how they look

Cut controls brilliance. A well-cut 0.75 ct stud will out-sparkle a poorly-cut 1.00 ct every time, and the difference is obvious on camera. Aim for:

• Round brilliant with Excellent or Ideal cut grade for maximum light return
• Princess, cushion, or oval cuts for a slightly more modern silhouette, ideally with good-to-excellent cut grade
• Avoid “steep-deep” proportions that trap light instead of returning it

If a listing doesn’t disclose cut grade or dimensions, ask. At MyLuxVault, every diamond listing includes cut grade where certified.

3. Color and clarity

For studs specifically:

• Color: G–H is the sweet spot for white gold or platinum settings. In yellow gold, you can go J–K and the warmth of the stone harmonizes with the metal. Anything below K starts to look visibly yellow to most eyes.
• Clarity: SI1–SI2 is fine for most stud sizes. Inclusions in an SI stone are, by definition, not visible to the naked eye. For stones above 1.50 ct each, bump to VS2 because any inclusions become more visible at that size.

4. Setting style

The setting holds the diamond and determines the profile:

• Four-prong (Martini) — classic, minimal metal, maximum light. The most common stud setting.
• Bezel — diamond fully wrapped in metal. Extremely secure, very clean look, lower profile. Best for active lifestyles.
• Three-prong — slightly more modern, shows more of the stone but is less secure than four-prong.
• Halo — center stone surrounded by pavé diamonds. Makes a 0.50 ct look like a 1.00 ct. Higher profile but more secure than you might think.

5. Backs and closures

The back is where most stud disasters happen:

• Push back (friction back) — standard, secure for everyday use. Check the tension periodically; they loosen with wear.
• Screw back — threaded post screws into the back. More secure than push back, required for children’s jewelry. Slightly fiddly to put on.
• Latch back / lock back — a hinged lever locks over the post. Very secure, easy to open.

For studs above 1.00 ct total, we always recommend screw backs or latch backs.

6. Metal choice

White gold or platinum for maximum contrast against colorless diamonds. Yellow gold for warmer diamond colors (J–K range) or for a deliberate warm look. Rose gold is less common for studs but beautiful with champagne or slightly warm diamonds. See our 14K vs 18K guide for karat decisions.
